1. Budget-Setting a budget can determine two things: widen or narrow down your search. Consider what type of finance options are available. 
2. Space-determine what room your are purchasing it for, measure the doorway, stairs (if applicable), and hallways. Do you want to have reasonable amount of space to walk around or place other decors etc?
3. Funtionality-serving for entertainment purpose, comfortable sitting, media features (charging stations, wireless remote, console options etc.)
4. Quality and Durability- Does it family and pet, high traffic, environment? How long will it last (5, 10, 15 plus years)? 
5. Style- Does it have to be stationary or motion? If stationary, do you prefer high leg on your piece of furniture? What is the environment like- high or low traffic, formal room, game room, etc.?
